Diesel Dual Mass Flywheel Clutch
Dual Mass Flywheels vs Solid Flywheel Replacements
There are several items specific to diesel powered light truck applications that
may influence your decision on the correct clutch and flywheel combination to
use in the vehicle being repaired. Many Ford and GM diesel powered light
trucks use a DMF style flywheel. DMF's (dual mass flywheels) can be identified
by their two-piece design and by the coil springs located inside the ringger
diameter. GM now replaces the DMF with a solid flywheel design during warranty
service work. Ford has also introduced a solid flywheel option for their diesel applications.
DMF and solid flywheel designs have specific strengths and weaknesses.

Disadvantage: Solid flywheel kits contain series dampened coil discs that perform most, but not all, of the functions of the DMF. The
DMF has a slip joint located between the primary and secondary portion of the flywheel. This slip joint protects the transmission from
torque overloads. If the slip joint fails and/or wears out, the DMF will still transmit power to the transmission, allowing the vehicle to
"limp" to a service area. The series dampened disc, when subjected to torque overloads, is designed to fail in order to protect the transmission.
If the series dampened disc fails, the vehicle becomes powerless.
Solid flywheel conversions do not last as long in extreme duty use.
Vehicles will be somewhat louder at idle with solid flywheel.
DMF Replacement Advantage: The clutch disc used with a DMF has less reciprocating mass than the disc w/solid flywheel therefore
the transmission synchoronizers and driveshaft universal joints last longer.
The DMF slip joint is designed to protect the transmission from torque overloads there a DMF and new clutch kit will last longer that the
solif flywheel option if the turbo boost has been altered and/or a performance computer chip has been added.
The DMF is better able to dissipate heat creating longer clutch life.
Disadvantage: Cost of DMF replacement.
